About NJGMC

Chorus History

The New Jersey Gay Men’s Chorus (NJGMC) is a volunteer chorus drawing from communities in New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania.

During our 18 year history, the NJGMC has presented an annual concert series consisting of two or three concert weekends, as well as several run-outs and other performances as part of our commitment to community involvement and outreach. We have appeared at public displays of the AIDS Memorial Quilt (sponsored by the New Jersey Names Project), the New Jersey Gay and Lesbian Pride Parade and Rally in Asbury Park, the GSA Forum sponsored by GLSEN, the Yom HaShoah commemoration at the Jewish Community Center in Edison and the Kristallnacht commemoration at the New Jersey State House in Trenton. In February of 2005, we had the thrilling experience of performing “Sing for the Cure,” a musical benefit for breast cancer education, at Carnegie Hall.

The Chorus has collaborated with several other choruses throughout the United States, including the Denver Gay Men’s Chorus, Harrisburg Gay Men’s Chorus, Rochester Gay Men’s Chorus, Baltimore Men’s Chorus and Philadelphia Gay Men’s Chorus. In conjunction with the Chamber Choir of the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington DC, we recorded the CD “Prayers for Bobby”, a work inspired by the book of the same name which was recently made into a movie starring Sigourney Weaver. In the 1999-2000 season, under the direction of then Artistic Director Richard Loatman, we recorded “To Everything There is a Season”, a compilation of musical highlights taken from each of our concerts.

The NJGMC is the only New Jersey member of the roughly 200-member international Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses (GALA Choruses), a network of GLBT and GLBT-allied choruses from all over the world that sponsors ongoing networking opportunities as well as conferences and festivals for its members. We have been the Garden State ambassadors at events in Tampa, Denver, Kansas City, Montreal and the GALA Choruses Festival 2008 in Miami, where our performance received rave reviews and three standing ovations.
