Welcome to the The New Jersey Gay Men's Chorus Website
Chorus History - The Road We've Traveled
The New Jersey Gay Men's Chorus (NJGMC) is a volunteer chorus drawing from communities in New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania. Established in 1991, as the Delaware Valley Men's Chorus, it was renamed in July 1996.
During its 17 year history, the NJGMC has presented an annual two-concert season with one concert weekend in December and one in June. We have also done several concerts and appearances as part of our tradition of community involvement and outreach. We have appeared at public displays of the AIDS Memorial Quilt (sponsored by the NJ Names Project), the New Jersey Gay and Lesbian Pride Parade and Rally in Asbury Park, the "Equality Begins at Home" Rally in Trenton and the "Victim of Hate Crimes" rally in Somerville. In addition, we have performed for PFLAG of North Jersey, the GSA Forum sponsored by GLSEN, the Yom HaShoah commemoration at the Jewish Community Center in Edison and the Kristallnacht commemoration at the New Jersey State House in Trenton. In February of 2005 we had the thrilling experience of performing "Sing for the Cure", a musical benefit for breast cancer education, at Carnegie Hall.
The Chorus has collaborated with several choruses throughout the United States, such as The Denver Gay Men's Chorus, the Harrisburg Gay Men's Chorus, Rochester Gay Men's Chorus, Baltimore Men's Chorus, Philadelphia Gay Men's Chorus, Spruce Street Singers, the Lehigh Valley Gay Men's Chorus and the Lawrence Chorale. In 1995, we participated in a benefit concert with various men's choruses from Pennsylvania featuring Marilyn Horne. In addition, we recorded the CD "Prayers for Bobby" with music written by NJGMC founding Artistic Director J. A. Kawarsky in partnership with the Chamber Choir of the Gay Men's Chorus of Washington DC. During the 1999-2000 season, under the direction of then Artistic Director Richard Loatman, we recorded "To Everything There is a Season", a compilation of musical highlights taken from each of our concerts.
The NJGMC is the only New Jersey member of the roughly 200-member international Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses (GALA Choruses), a network of GLBT and GLBT-allied choruses from all over the world that sponsors ongoing networking opportunities as well as conferences and festivals for its members. We have proudly represented New Jersey at festivals and conferences in Tampa, Denver, Kansas City and Montreal and received rave review in the process.
